Holiday Weekend Open thread

It's time for a new open thread, all topics welcome.

There's a lot to unpack (free link) in this week's Supreme Court decisions, and I'm hoping that Peter G. will lead the way.

There's a ton of drama in the media coverage of Yevgeny Prigozhin, head of the Wagner Group, and his attempted "coup" or minor "protest" against Moscow or its military, depending on whose version you choose to believe, along with belated appearances by Putin and the comments of the ever-chatty President of Belarus.

I tend to pay more attention to news in Mexico, Colombia and even Venezuela. I keep seeing reports that the next prisoner swap may include Alex Saab. I hope so. Kidnapping him in Cape Verde and extraditing him to the U.S. was wrong, and in my view, illegal.

I'll close with this bit of news from Cuba: Elián González, now 29, has become a member of Congress in Cuba:

n April, González was sworn in as a member of Cuba’s National Assembly of People’s Power, effectively Cuba’s congress. He represents Cárdenas, a town in Matanzas province about 80 miles (about 130 kilometers) east of Havana where he lived until his mother took him to sea. He still lives in the province.

Again, all topics welcome, including what you are cooking for this 4th of July.

    This could become interesting (5.00 / 4) (#34)

"Harvard University was accused by minority groups of violating federal law in giving preferential treatment to the children of alumni and wealthy donors just days after the Republican-appointee controlled Supreme Court struck down the use of race-based affirmative action in college admissions. The long-standing practice benefitting "legacies" flouts the Civil Rights Act of 1964's bar on racial discrimination in programs that receive federal funds, the plaintiffs contend. They point out that some 70% of legacies are White. The complaint, filed with the Department of Education, comes as the US continues to grapple with the fallout of the high court's 6-3 ruling curtailing affirmative action, which had been used by universities to diversify campuses after historically discriminatory admissions practices."

If this eventually makes it up to SCOTUS, the conservative justices opinion on why rich kids should get special treatment would IMO be  very interesting.

    Why? (5.00 / 2) (#49)
by KeysDan on Tue Jul 04, 2023 at 01:30:56 PM EST
President Biden nominated Elliott Abrams to the bipartisan US Advisory Commission on Public Policy, a commission that appraises the US government activities intended to inform and influence foreign publics.

The 75-year old Abrams served in three Republican Administrations, the latest as envoy to Iran in TFG's Administration. Abrams was up to his ears in the Iran Contra scandal, pleading guilty to two misdemeanors and receiving two years probation (withholding information from Congress). He was subsequently pardoned by Daddy Bush.

As Assistant Secretary of State he was involved in funding anti-communist rebels in Nicaragua, and  being blasted by Human Rights Watch for downplaying the massacre of 1000 people by US- trained and equipped individuals in El Salvador.  Abrams has continued to support these activities' benefits , recently doubling down during questioning by Rep. Omar(D.MN).

Perhaps this is part of swapping deal and the commission is not all that important, anyway.  Or maybe, a good liar is called for, but any one of the points on Elliott's resume would seem to be disqualifying for any government post.

Tony Evers uses veto powers to extend annual increases for public schools for the next four centuries

Evers crafted the four-century school aid extension by striking a hyphen and a "20" from a reference to the 2024-25 school year. The increase of $325 per student is the highest single-year increase in revenue limits in state history.

House Republicans Will Still Call Indicted Witness
July 11, 2023 at 8:28 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard 31 Comments

"House Republicans on Tuesday said they still hope to call a man indicted on charges of arms trafficking and acting as an unregistered foreign agent for Chinese entities as a witness in their investigations of President Biden and his son Hunter," the Washington Post reports.

"Senior Republicans dismissed the importance of the charges against the fugitive defendant and instead accused the Justice Department, the FBI and other authorities of orchestrating a vast conspiracy on behalf of the first family, providing no documentation or other evidence to support their accusations."

before a Congressional committee can be a path to a forced dismissal of the indictment. It worked for Oliver North in the Iran-Contra scandal. Called before a committee, takes the Fifth (as he must), granted immunity by the committee, then the judge in the criminal case holds that the prosecutors cannot prove that none of them accessed the immunized testimony, and/or that none of their other evidence is derived from that source.

The San Francisco-based company announced Wednesday it's ceasing operations and liquidating the beloved business "following a combination of challenging economic factors and declining sales since 2016," a press release said. Craft brewers, in particular, have been struggling for a variety of reasons including changing consumer habits, rising costs and lingering supply-chain challenges.

Another problem has been Sapporo, the Japanese beer company that bought the brand in 2017. Employees complained to VinePair last month about Sapporo's alleged mismanagement and lack of understanding of craft beer in the US. In addition, a 2021 rebrand of Anchor was also criticized for pivoting too far away from the brand's classic look.

for the health care of women and girls of child bearing age.  It has been determined to be safe and effective when directions are followed faithfully (one a day taken at the same time each day).

Opill differs from prescription  anti-conception products in that it contains just one hormone, the synthetic progesterone, progestin, whereas,  most prescription only products contain a mixture of progestin and estrogen (the estrogen component may bring potential issues, such as, rarely, clots).

Opill will, of course, become the new focus of religious zealotry. Clarence and Salmon Sam will be on it---America if you are listening, bring us a case.  Thomas, in Dobbs, made it clear he would like to re-consider the privacy underpinnings to Connecticut v Griswold (1965) and other such  precedents.

Is critically important to broad use that the OTC oral contraceptives be covered by insurance.  Perrigo, the pharmaceutical manufacturer, has not given information on cost, but it is expected to be in the range on $20 to $30 per month.  Out-of-pocket costs of more than $10 is likely to be a disincentive to usage by women in lower income brackets.

Perrigo has indicated that they plan on a coupon program for those who have financial need, but details have not been released. Hopefully, President Biden will be able, by executive order, to provide guidelines for ACA and Medicare inclusivity.

The thing is the state is changing.  The northwest corner of the state has become one of the fastest growing suburban areas in the country.

There was Walmart and Tyson.  Now Amazon.

Young people are coming to the state for work faster than they can build houses.

That's might not effect local government in rural areas like this but it will effect state wide races for sure.

the term, the Supreme Court will consider in the next term, whether a 30-year old federal law that prohibits people under domestic violence restraining orders from possessing guns violates the Second Amendment.

In the US v Rahimi the 5th Circuit struck down the federal law prohibiting possession of a firearm by people subject to domestic violence protection orders, siding with domestic abusers. Rahimi assaulted his ex-girlfriend and, in, perhaps, the understatement of New Orleans history, acknowledged that Rahimi was "hardly a model citizen", he is entitled to a gun because Second Amendment.

We can start taking bets on which way this Court will rule. My money is on the abusers. Unless, of course, they took the case to uphold the federal law and reign in the very conservative 5th circuit, made all the more so by a half-dozen Trump appointees (I.e., Leo Leonard firebrands).

seem more on target if the Free Speech Clause, in this case, applied to the customer.  The web designer displays the customer's content.

Moreover, this is a website (albeit an imaginary one) we are talking about not a creation of art. The Court ruled  that it is  expressive speech, although it does not appear that an example of her artistic design,  along with customized capabilities, was presented or evaluated.

Expanding the holding, it seems that a carpenter could refuse to make custom kitchen cabinets for a gay couple, but would not be able to refuse to install store bought kitchen cabinets.  And, a quandary arises if those Home Depot cabinets are installed with customized moldings.

Nor "Our web designer agrees with the Supreme Court decision, or the state law, that says we can get married just like any other loving couple." It was SBC ministers that were quoting the bible "slaves obey your masters" as Civil Rights being against God. They are the ultimate purveyors of white male patriarchy. They complain about the decine of Christianity but are unwilling to look in the mirror and take any responsiblity for their part in it which is a very large part. Evangelicals have just about destroyed Christianity in America. And their fusion with politics has been a double disaster for them and everybody else.

    Achilles

Is that Brad Pitt staring out from behind that bronze helmet? Yes, yes, it is. As film buffs and mythology nerds will know, Pitt portrayed the ancient Greek hero Achilles in the 2004 movie Troy, based on Homer's epic poem the Iliad. As in the Iliad, Pitt's Achilles emerges as the hero of the film, bursting onto the battlefield toward the end of the conflict to revenge the death of his comrade Patroclus at the hands of the Trojan hero Hector.

As many commentators online have pointed out, there a poignant irony to the fact that a video targeting LGBTQ people included an image of Achilles, given that many scholars have interpreted Achilles' friendship with Patroclus as a type of homosexual relationship. But the valorization of Achilles fits neatly within a broader far-right obsession with ancient Rome and Greece, which some conservatives hold up as the cradle of "Western civilization." Death of QAnon cult leader sparks new conspiracy

Vice brings us a blockbuster new exclusive: Michael Protzman, leader of a QAnon cult premised on former U.S. president John F. Kennedy being alive and well and about to reveal himself to the faithful any minute now, just you wait, has died.

Well, probably. Maybe. It depends on your definition of dead, really, and who among us are really alive, when you think about it. Yes, a Minnesota medical examiner may be quite certain Protzman is dead, and the doctors at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, are quite sure he was dead when he was carted off to the morgue, but Vice reports that Protzman's cult followers don't actually believe that he's dead--and why would they?

These are not people who are going to be dissuaded by a medical examiner's report that their dearest leader died after a dirt bike accident tenderized him to a degree incompatible with continued corporal existence

GOP AGs threaten Target over sales of Pride onesies, LGBTQ+-friendly garments

Stop Target now before more dogs go gay!
Conservatives seem awfully worked up about the "sexualization" of children these days. After all, American kids have traditionally learned about sex on the playground, or from their dad's stash of Hustler magazines, or while playing Skee-Ball at Chuck E. Cheese with a weirdly gregarious Roy Moore. It's the American way. But a Pride onesie for an infant who can't read? That could be the straw that finally breaks the yawing back of Western civilization. And Republican attorneys general are standing in the gap in the silliest way possible.

A group of seven GOP AGs--from states with so little crime they apparently need to invent it--have sent a threatening letter to Target, warning the retailer to cut it out with the rainbow shi+ already. These include the crime-free utopias Arkansas, Mississippi, Missouri, Kentucky, Indiana, and South Carolina. Oh, and Idaho, which has a relatively low homicide rate because everyone's too busy murdering fashion to bother with people.

The NYTimes and WaPo (none / 0) (#116)
by KeysDan on Mon Jul 10, 2023 at 01:57:58 PM EST
are reporting that Clarence Thomas has benefited from being a member of the Horatio Alger Association, of which he has been a member for 30 years.  It is an organization that he has called "a home for Virginia (Ginni) and me"

Named for the Gilded Age author, the Association espouses "rags to riches" hoping to aspire younger generations by giving awards to those who fit the profile.

The award festivities include dinner at the National Portrait Gallery and a reception at the Ritz Carlton, DC.

Through the circle of wealthy friends made in the group, Thomas has been invited on luxurious vacations, VIP sections of NFL games, and other special events. The lavish gifts were not disclosed by Thomas.

Thomas has given the group's members access to the Supreme Court, placing medals around the necks of new members during an exclusive ceremony in the courtroom.

The reporting by the NYTimes and WaPo speak to the need for ethics reform, which is necessary by insufficient.  The DOJ should investigate and, if crimes were committed, Clarence should be prosecuted.  It seems that the defense for Thomas is that he would have ruled in favor of his rich circle of friends with or without the bribes.

Interesting Note: Horatio Alger was a Minister/Pastor who was removed from his post  after, in 1866, a Church Committee investigated reports that Alger sexually molested boys.  He was charged with " abominable and revolting crimes of gross familiarity with boys."

Curious that Thomas, a leading anti-gay member of the Court,  would be in a leadership role of the named Association. His "Cinderella" books for boys, such as Ragged Dick and the character Tattered Tom, in the Arab in the Street, where it is not clear if Tom is a boy or girl, would seem an anathema to him.

by Peter G on Wed Jul 12, 2023 at 09:25:13 PM EST
a report from the investigating grand jury, along with summary, live testimony from a supervisory investigating agent, so the jurors can ask questions about the proposed indictment.  The agent's testimony is thus all or nearly all hearsay, but no problem since (in PA at least, as in the feds) the rules of trial evidence, other than privileges, do not apply before the grand jury. In some states, the proposed defendant must be offered an opportunity to testify before the indicting grand jury, although it is rarely wise to accept that invitation. Dunno if that applies to Georgia.

carnitas with lard.. Maybe only 2 tbsp for about 3 lbs of pork shoulder. It should be well fatted. cut into chunks and browned then braised with orange juice (bitter orange if you can find)  and lime, I add onion, garlic and jalapenos and/or serranos, but any peppers to your hotness taste will do. After about two or three hours uncover and cook off the liquid. The key to good carnitas is to finish by sauteeing in the fat to crisp it up.

was at the Old Town Mexican Cafe in San Diego, CA. It was the bomb. It is the carnitas that I have compared every other carnitas dish. Never dwelt on exactly how it was made. It was just delicious.

I live in an area devoid of good food. South central PA food is bland and all the same. I have no good reviews of "PA Dutch" or Amish cooking. But then I lived off Roberto's and chicken burritos when I lived in San Diego. And then it was shrimp poboys, red beans and rice, gumbo and jambalaya when I lived in New Orleans. Nothing like that around here. Gotta go to Philly or Baltimore for good food. Pit beef in Baltimore, roast pork in Philly (you can have the cheesesteak).

However, a small taco place opened in Dover a couple of years ago that made excellent carnitas tacos. Hope you make some carnitas that comes out well.

The Republicans will love him all the more. What is wrong with these people?   Can't they find a less craven fascist?  At least, one who has not yet been caught?

In one way it is sad that a former president is being indicted for numerous crimes. OTOH, no one deserves it more. Trump has made Nixon look like a rank amateur.

that Trumps is reportedly the only target letter we know about.  And the only one Trump world knows about.
Trumps is said to be working the phones trying to find out who else.  Presumably to figure out who cut a deal.

If Trump is the only person Smith indicts for J6... .

Just wow.  That will be a show

    in a different case.

Doing Trump in his own case seems smart.  In my non professional opinion.

Big hit with the Trumpets. Indeed, Trump is planning a special showing at his Bedminster golf club, if all those indictments don't interfere with scheduling.

A story of human trafficking and sex slavery, based on purported experience of Tim Ballard, a former Homeland Security agent. A serious subject seemingly co-opted by Q-Anon. Ballard and the actor who plays him, James Caviezel, are associated with Q, Ballard is a proponent of the Wayfair furniture conspiracy wherein children are placed in furniture boxes, and Caviezel likes the conspiracy of drinking children's blood to prevent aging.

The director, Alejandro.Morteverde, is said to be anti-gay, perhaps, adding to the "faith-based" characterization of the film.  Also,  Caviezel played Jesus, in the Christian hit,"Passion of the Christ".

Otherwise, according to reviews, the movie is a decent police procedural and thriller.  Agent Ballast tracks down a little boy and girl from Honduras taken away in trafficking. This may be both a Q dog- whistle (after all, what about that ring in the basement of the pizza parlor) and a movie. A serious subject that should go beyond pulling the heart and purse strings, and analyzing and addressing the tragedy of human abuses.
